NAMI Family-to-Family Named Evidence-Based Program

Sep 12

First, I’d like to remind everyone that our NAMI support group meets tonight at 6:30 pm at the Crawfordsville First United Methodist Church, room 204. We just acquired a small bookcase from Goodwill, so we have an official resource center now.

Also, near the end of May, 2013, the NAMI Family-to-Family Education Program was added to the U.S. Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) National Registry of Evidence-based Programs and Practices (NREPP). Being named an evidence-based program and practice is a big deal, because it’s an official acknowledgement that this program really works.

Studies consistently show that when family and friends have the information and training to help a loved one who’s living with mental illness, treatment is more effective and outcomes improve. When you read that, you might think, “Well, duh! Of course the more support anyone with an illness has, the better the outcome.” Yet, we struggle in our efforts to get people signed up for this most excellent course.

We’re still accepting students and will continue to do so up to and including the third class on September 25. Please register ahead of time, so we can be sure to have a free manual ready for you. Check out “Free 12-Week NAMI Family-to-Family Course” for details. After the third class, registration for new students will be closed.

Please help us spread the word about this course and our support group. NAMI is a great organization because of the people involved in it. The more people we have in our class and support group who deal with situations involving mental illness, the smarter we are and the more we can help one another. Even if you’re not the type to seek help in a support group (not everyone is), keep in mind that you might be able to help someone else with your experiential wisdom. You may be the only one in the room who has the answer or solution someone needs.

Hope to see you in class or at the support group.
